Windows on Jazz is designed to nourish the curious and the thoughtful. Whether student, fan or educator, we hope this site leads you to deeper understanding and greater love for this music we call jazz.

Educators, click on your button above for more opportunities!

The intent of this site is to be a portal to a vibrant world whose history is full of controversy and vitality, seduction and rejection, tragedy and magic. It is not offered to form an authoritarian voice or establish jazz dogma. Windows on Jazz offers links to the artists with samplings of styles, and suggestions for educators as they seek to engage their students in creative encounter. You'll also find an attempt to describe some of the relationships between styles of expression from the roots of jazz to the modern era.
As human constructs, windows are known to be imperfect by nature, and the relationships between styles presented in this site are offered only as tools for discussion. We hope that students of jazz history will criticize this offering with some brutality, and you are welcome to share your criticisms with us, or simply enjoy your insights and deeper understanding of jazz music.
